Create a KPI

Overview

WorkBoard makes it easy to create a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) that is separate from your team’s OKRs.

Use KPIs in WorkBoard when:

  • You want to track ongoing business health metrics that aren’t tied to a specific objective or time period.

  • You need visibility into key operational measures such as revenue, uptime, or customer satisfaction.

  • You want to monitor trends over time and ensure accountability for business performance.

KPIs are continuous measures that reflect how well your business or team is performing day to day, week to week, or quarter to quarter.

  4. Fill out KPI Details

  • Complete the required fields for your KPI.
You can always come back and edit these later.

    • Required fields:

      • Name – what is being measured;

      • Owner - by default, the creator is automatically assigned as the owner. You can change this if needed to assign ownership to another person.

    • Optional fields:

      • Description – add context or a definition for your KPI.

      • Co-owners – select additional people who help maintain or update the KPI  (available under the Owner field).

      • Team – assign the KPI to a specific team (if applicable).

      • Measured As:

        • Number (default) – for counts or totals such as revenue or users.

        • Percentage (%) – for ratios or rates such as uptime or satisfaction.

      • Monitored As:

        • Just tracking

        • Stay at or above / Stay at or below

        • Stay between

        • Less is better

        • More is better

      • Visible to
        • Entire Organization (default) – visible to everyone.

        • Custom – visible to selected teams, owners, co-owners, and data providers.

      • Data Provider
        • The person / people who will be responsible for posting updates.

      • Cadence: Select how often the KPI should be updated:
        • Daily – for fast-changing metrics

        • Weekly (default) – for most business rhythms. If you select Weekly, choose the day of the week for updates (Monday–Sunday).

        • Monthly / Quarterly – for strategic or stable metrics

      • Data source options

        • Manual entiries — by default, each KPI is created as Manual Entry, meaning the Data providers enters values directly and is responsible for regular updates.

        • Automated updates — you can change the data source at any time by connecting the KPI to an external system to enable automatic updates.

Automated KPIs pull data directly from the connected system, ensuring accuracy and reducing manual effort while still allowing you to add narrative context when needed.
